It’s that TIME of the year!

Skyline College Concert Choir sings “It’s that TIME of Year!” a program of choral music about the passage of time and the winter holidays – with selections that range from the quietly meditative to exuberantly jubilant in a variety of styles from classical to contemporary.   Our two featured works will be Craig Courtney’s delightful romp through musical time, “A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas,” and a choral “Medley fromRENT,” the modern classic Broadway musical by Jonathan Larson, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original New York Theater Workshop production this year. The story of RENT (like Puccini’s opera La Boheme upon which it is based) takes place over the winter holidays and asks profound questions about the passage of time – most famously in the song “Seasons of Love” that asks “Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes; how do you measure a year?” Classical selections include the opening movement from J.S. Bach’s serenely beautiful cantata “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit” (God’s Time is the Best Time) and Mendelssohn’s lovely setting of the prayer “Da Pacem Domine” (Grant Us Peace In Our Time). Traditional holiday favorites include “The Christmas Waltz” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”  We will also sing the bitingly funny parody “Twelve Days AFTER Christmas.” Popular music selections include “That Time of Year” from the Disney’s Frozen spin-off Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, Pete Seeger’s folk-rock classic“Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season),” and two time-related selections by Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz – “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin and “In Whatever Time We Have” from Children of Eden
